Old Cataract Hotel was officially opened in 1899,
and many will know its grand Moorish ball hall from the star filled
movie based upon Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile".
But the hotel has not only hosted silver screen "stars", already two year after its opening they had to erect tents around the hotel to be able to book place for all those who would keep company with world leading figures and Royal families from Europe and the Orient. The facade is prestigious and the garden that goes all down to the Nile is magic - but the most unique part is maybe the fact that this must be one of the most romantic hotels in the world. Hardly any place can one see as many couples of any age, holding hands while strolling the gardens or enjoying the sunset from the beautiful terrace. We have already mentioned the Moorish Ballroom that serve as the hotels "1902" restaurant, with its grand design and dome. Outside is the wonderful nature of Aswan and large white sails of the traditional feluccas fill the Nile view from sunrise to sunset. The Elephantine Island is nearly in reach in front of you, and that's where the ancient Egyptians knew the River God himself lived...
